There have been many times that I have had clients come back to me after their first session (or their first in a long while), saying they feel much worse after the session than expected. Usually, the sensations are mild and last 1-2 days, but in some rare cases I have known clients to feel REALLY physically and emotionally drained for a longer spell of time. On a personal note, I have experienced this when I first started learning Chios healing (my first therapy training) and it was really intense! Awful feeling, but in the long run it broke down and released so much!
This also tends to come up more during certain times of the year – for example, the current Mercury Retrograde has been bringing up all sorts of releases lately, which I’m working with my clients.
The big question I get is: “I thought Reiki or Chios healing (both working on your chakras and the energy system) is meant to help me feel better and balanced, not worse?”
This is known as “The Healing Crisis”
As with all detox plans (energy, nutrition etc), there is a release. And this release can be on a physical, emotional, energy level – so there can be many symptoms that do come up as the toxins are revealing their true Self to you. As I mentioned, it is usually mild and it doesn’t happen to everyone – after all, each and every person reacts to energy healing (whether it’s Reiki, Chios healing or any form of using Universal Life Force energy) in such a unique way, depending on their sensitivity to energy, their energy system condition and what they need to release.

So, what should I do if it does come up?
✨ Drink as much water as possible, keep hydrated!
Water is a beautiful healing source. Drink distilled clean water regularly, which will help flush out your toxins and keep your energy vibrating. Some people tend to actually report feeling more thirsty during this time, so you know what to do! Listen to your body, drink and enjoy 🙂
✨ Get as much rest as possible!
Your body is going to need it. If your energy level is low, this is your body’s way of telling you to get more rest and let your body regenerate its Self. Sleep does wonderful things to our body and mind!
✨ Meditate and scan your body
If you aren’t already doing so, make a routine to meditate. A nice time to start this routine is at night. Read this blog post. Also, scan your body and check which parts of your body feels heavier – the healing crisis can actually help you to become more aware of where your body holds stress and emotions. Slowly scan your body before you sleep and see what you are feeling – start from your feet and work your way up to your head. This is also a very grounding technique to keep your body connected and strong.

✨ Release through journal work
Write, write, write! Jot down what thoughts are coming up that may be the source of your emotional release. Your mind will be releasing negative thoughts at this point – is there a reoccurring thought pattern? What is your instinct and thoughts guiding you to reflect on? Work with it, even if it is painful. Identifying these negative thought patterns can help you break the cycle in the long run. Writing is a form of release and a safe (and private) way to explore these thoughts. If you are doing any talking therapies at this time, you may want to explore the topics that come up with your therapist.
✨ Put healthy foods and drinks in your body
That means avoiding foods like caffeine, alcohol, junk food, sugary/salty foods and anything else that is not good for you. If you are in detox-mode, why put more toxins into your body? Increase your intake of foods that are healthy, raw, full of goodness and energy!
✨ Be gentle with your Self!
Depending on how much release is needed, the amount of time you are releasing can vary from person to person. It is at this time you should keep your environment as positive as possible. Surround your Self with things and people who you love. This is also a space to allow your Self to take time for you, without guilt or resistance… this time is a special place to be in to move forward!
🗝 Should I come for another session?
You know your body more than anyone else – so trust your instinct! The following sessions after the initial session tend to help and ease the process of releasing (I usually recommend 2 sessions to begin).
A lot of clients may assume 1 session will heal everything, which is not the case most of the time. We sadly live in a quick-fix age where the expectations for “getting it all sorted” are highly expected to be instant and last. But healing (not just with energy healing, but with many other therapies and medical treatments) takes time – And if there needs to be a deeper release, more sessions are beneficial and help with the process. In some cases, a talking therapy also works well alongside the energy healing so the released issues can be directed and dealt with as they come up.
This should be something you can talk to your therapist about and they will advise you on what would work for you.
Energy healing is subtle – bot very powerful and it can be a wonderful tool to keep in touch with your Self
