Deedra Ludwig – Born in Chicago, Illinois has lived in the US, Barbados and the UK. Studied art in NYC, graduated from NYU with a BFA in visual arts & an MFA from University of Sussex, Falmer, UK.
“My artistic path has been influenced by artists such as John Turner, Andy Goldsworthy, Anselm Keifer & Antoni Tapies. My interests include organic farming, kayaking, cycling, sustainable living, travel and reggae music culture.
Over the past twenty years, I have brought my physical travel experiences together with my meditative journeys in my studio. I primarily work with non-traditional materials gathered from diverse locations. I begin by surveying an area of interest where I collect soil, plant material, stones, pollen and other organic substances.
This collection of materials is transported back to my studio where the elements are ground together, added to wax, resin and oil in attempt to preserve an area of landscape.
I envision and attempt to recreate a “sense of place” which is emotional, tactile, atmospheric and serves as a visual record of nature’s constant state of regeneration and flux. Abstract form allows me to present elements of change and their transformative evolution into sublime.
The question within is how can I as an artist, encourage a cultural shift to ecologically ethical behavior and nourish integrated relationships with our planet?”
